Osteopathy

Dr. Smith Osteopaths subscribe to the simple principle that a person's health is reflected in the body's structure. The focus of an osteopathic treatment is to restore balance to the body's motion and tissues, which will allow the inherent healing mechanisms to perform at their best. An osteopath is trained to palpate (feel) subtle changes in a person's living anatomy that limit these healing mechanisms. It is this fine sense of palpation that makes the osteopath uniquely qualified to perform manual diagnosis and treatment.

Training

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) are fully licensed physicians as are M.D.s. Both receive equivalent training in the use of medication and surgery – often in the same institutions. Both are fully licensed to practice medicine and perform surgery in the U.S. The main difference in training is the instruction that D.O.s receive in osteopathic principles and practice.

Your Doctor

Changing careers from mathematician to physician, Dr. Smith received his D.O. at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in California including a fifth year as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). Following graduation he completed a Family Practice internship at California Hospital in Los Angeles, CA with a firm foundation in the medical care of patients.

Continuing his studies in osteopathy Dr. Smith completed a residency in OMM at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. By invitation he remained there for two years teaching residents. This inner city program provides osteopathic treatment to all ages (newborns to elders) both in and out of the hospital.
