Osteopathy
Osteopaths subscribe to the simple principle that a person's health is reflected in the body's structure. The focus of an osteopathic treatment is to restore balance to the body's motion and tissues, which will allow the inherent healing mechanisms to perform at their best. An osteopath is trained to palpate (feel) subtle changes in a person's living anatomy that limit these healing mechanisms. It is this fine sense of palpation that makes the osteopath uniquely qualified to perform manual diagnosis and treatment.
Training
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.s) are fully licensed physicians as are M.D.s. Both receive equivalent training in the use of medication and surgery – often in the same institutions. Both are fully licensed to practice medicine and perform surgery in the U.S. The main difference in training is the instruction that D.O.s receive in osteopathic principles and practice.
Scope of treatment
Since the focus is on restoring the body's healing capacity, virtually any condition may be improved by osteopathic treatment of a patient. Specific examples include:
|
Children Ear infections Sucking difficulty Colic / Spitting up Birth Trauma Attention Deficit Respiratory Asthma / COPD Allergies / Sinusitis Pregnancy Back Pain Digestive upset Pelvic mobility |
Somatic Pain Headache / Migraine Sciatica / Trauma Carpal Tunnel Syndr. Neck, Back, Joint pain Other Lymphedema Post surgical recovery Digestive disorders Bell’s Palsy / Whiplash Trigeminal Neuralgia Vertigo / Tinnitus Seizure / Stroke |
Your Doctor

Continuing his studies in osteopathy Dr. Smith completed a residency in OMM at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. By invitation he remained there for two years teaching residents. This inner city program provides osteopathic treatment to all ages (newborns to elders) both in and out of the hospital. He has also had the privilege of studying with several elders of the osteopathic profession.
Currently he is devoted to the care of patients in his private practice in Katonah, Ardsley, and Manhattan.
