What you eat matters.
You already know this.
But in my ongoing quest to help you clean up your diet…
Allow me to offer more insight into the power of whole foods.
Because a popular produce pick might just save your memory.
Whole or extracted
It’s no secret that mushrooms are often considered a superfood.
I’ve even reported on how they can help boost your mood.
Now, researchers are diving deeper into the cognitive benefits of lion’s mane mushrooms, specifically.
Several studies suggest this mushroom contains various bioactive compounds that can cross the brain-blood barrier, ultimately promoting nerve growth and combatting neuroinflammation.
But get this…
If mushrooms aren’t your thing, you don’t even have to eat them whole.
Because researchers analyzed the impact of dietary supplementation with Hericium erinaceus (H. erinaceus) extract—lion’s mane mushroom extract. And they still found promising results…
Impressive cognitive protection
Researchers followed older adults who supplemented with lion’s mane extract for 12 to 16 weeks.
Turns out, supplement users may experience such profound memory enhancement that Patricia Gaines, ND, RH—a staff physician at Sonoran University of Health Sciences and a registered herbalist—recommends the mushroom not only to protect against cognitive decline…
But also “to patients recovering from brain injuries, such as concussions, to help speed up recovery.”
I must say, I’m not surprised.
In fact, I’ve included lion’s mane mushroom as part of my own brain-boosting protocol for years, as the research shows it offers critical support for memory and mood.
See, lion’s mane supplies your brain with nerve growth factors (NGF), which protect against brain cell death. This suggests it may even help regenerate damaged cells (though more research is needed to confirm this effect).
So, in addition to adding mushrooms to your grocery list, I recommend supplementing with 1,000 mg of H. erinaceus extract two times per day.
You can also eat lion’s mane mushrooms raw, dried, or cooked. A quick Google search will turn up some tasty recipes you can try.
