AHCC beats HPV

As I’ve mentioned many times, I only discuss products or nutritional ingredients that have real science behind them. To that end, I just read something exciting about a supplement that’s already earned a place on my top 10 list: the Japanese mushroom extract, AHCC (active hexose correlated compound).

According to a new clinical trial, AHCC appears to be effective against human papillomavirus (HPV)

Granted, it was a small study. But the results, presented at the 11th International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology in Houston, were very impressive. Ten HPV-positive women were treated orally with AHCC once daily for up to six months. After that period, eight of the subjects had no signs of HPV.

This is HUGE.

The HPV vaccine is controversial, at best…and downright deadly at worst. But with no effective medication available to treat HPV, many people feel backed into a corner when it comes to getting their kids vaccinated (the vaccine used to only be recommended for girls, but now it’s being forced on boys as well).

Pediatricians and government health “experts” are quick to point out the dangers of HPV to “sell” the vaccine to wary parents. For instance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, and is also associated with several other cancers as well (including anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer).

So if AHCC can offer a safe, natural treatment alternative that allows people to avoid the potentially dangerous vaccine, well—that’s one more feather in its already well-plumed cap. (Human and preclinical studies have already shown that AHCC improves the immune system to help the body fight off infections and block tumor growth.

But while we’re on the subject of this new research, I’m thrilled to tell you that a phase 2 trial is in the works to confirm these exciting findings about AHCC and HPV. And the research is being led by  Dr. Judith Smith, who I have had the pleasure of meeting many times at the AHCC symposium in Sapporo, Japan.

Dr. Smith led the first AHCC/HPV study and is the director of UTHealth’s Women’s Health Integrative Medicine Research Team, which focuses on the safe and effective use of nutritional and herbal supplements. (I wish more hospitals and medical centers had such departments.  The world would certainly be a better—and healthier—place.)

And in the meantime, there’s no reason to wait until all the results are in to put AHCC to good use. For general immune support, I recommend 1,000 mg of AHCC daily (I typically suggest one 500 mg dose in the morning and one at night).
