America: Land of the free, home of the OVERPRESCRIBED DRUGS?

America is nothing if not the “land of excess.”

So it’s really no surprise that we OVERPRESCRIBE DRUGS.

But there’s one drug in particular that we especially tend to dole out like candy…

To seniors, children, and everyone in between.

Yet, the majority of these prescriptions are deemed unnecessary or inappropriate.

And that’s downright disastrous…

A new top cause of DEATH?

I’m talking about antibiotics.

These drugs should only ever be prescribed to fight infections caused by bacteria—NOT your run-of-the-mill upper respiratory viruses, like the cold or flu.

That’s because the overuse and misuse of antibiotic drugs leads directly to the creation of new antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

And this is already becoming a problem…

In the U.S. alone, each year, there are more than 2.8 million antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. And, each year, they kill more than 35,000 people.

And, according to some experts, antibiotic resistance could be a top cause of death worldwide by 2050.

So, why are we STILL overprescribing them?!

Double check

It’s true that we will ALL need to take an antibiotic from time to time—when we develop a bacterial infection or when we undergo certain medical procedures. There’s no way around it.

But the important piece of the puzzle that many people overlook is this…

We want there to be an effective drug in the tool kit that will work when we actually need it!

So the next time you have a bad head cold or the flu, don’t lobby your doctor for an antibiotic, “just in case.”

And the next time your doctor or pediatrician recommends an antibiotic, discuss your concerns. Be sure the drug is truly needed to better your health outcome.
