Can this popular nutrient KILL cancer cells?

I think you’re going to be just as excited about this story as I am to report on it. Because it’s not every day that I get to write about a nutrient that can shrink tumors.

Yes, you read that right.

And yet, a new study found exactly that… linking a well-known omega-3 fatty acid (that you’ll find in oily fish and high-quality fish oil supplements) to tumor destruction

So without further ado, let’s dive right in…

Tumor cell death by DHA

Back in 2016, a team of oncology researchers at the University of Louvain found that tumor cells in acidosis—an acidic environment, which facilitates the spread of cancer—multiply by eating up fats rather than glucose.

And when tumor cells switch from fueling with glucose to fueling with fat, they end up being the most aggressive—ultimately forming new tumors.

(This is a major reason why keeping your body in an alkaline state is crucial for all of us—but especially for those with cancer.)

But here comes the really interesting part: The tumor cells in acidosis responded very differently to different fatty acids. And researchers later observed that while certain fatty acids stimulated the cells, others were able to kill them

This cell death is tied to fatty acid peroxidation. In other words, the higher the amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the tumor cell, the higher the risk of oxidation—and ultimately, destruction.

Under most conditions, the tumor cells can store fatty acids to protect them from such destruction. But these cells can’t store large amounts of DHA—a popular omega-3 fatty acid. Meaning the DHA oxidizes, poisons, and kills the cell.

This exciting, new discovery was outlined in the research team’s latest study, which was published recently in the journal Cell Metabolism.

In their experiments, the researchers used 3D tumor cells called spheroids. Sure enough, they found that, when exposed to DHA, the spheroids would grow… and then self-destruct.

They saw the same phenomenon in animals: When mice with tumors ate a diet rich in DHA, it slammed the brakes on tumor growth—compared to mice eating a regular diet.

Of course, I should mention that this research is still preliminary. But if this doesn’t emphasize the potential value of DHA—a perfectly safe, affordable, and natural substance—in fighting cancer, then I don’t know what will ever convince conventional medicine to get on board.

What I’m really hoping for is that science can figure out how to combine this finding with current drug therapies to achieve better results with cancer patients. But in the meantime, I can’t stress the importance of omega-3 fatty acids enough—whether or not you’re facing a cancer diagnosis.

The fact is, omega-3 fatty acids are essential for human health. Indeed, DHA and its counterpart, EPA, are crucial to cardiovascular health, brain function, vision, mental health, inflammation control, and more.

That’s why I always recommend taking a high-dose, high-quality fish oil supplement daily… one that contains at least 3,000 mg of DHA and EPA.
