Death by soda: Will you be sugar’s next victim?

I’ve been railing against sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) for my entire career.

Decades ago, I called them out as one of the worst sources of empty calories.

But as study after study has shown, the damage goes far beyond weight gain.

And this latest research? It’s downright jaw-dropping…

Sugar’s deadly toll

A new study that was published in Nature Medicine looked at the impact of SSBs on diagnoses of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Researchers analyzed data from 184 countries using the Global Dietary Database. And they uncovered some alarming statistics

According to the report, SSBs are linked to nearly 10 percent of all new Type 2 diabetes cases annually. That translates to about 2.2 million diagnoses worldwide!

And that’s not all…

These beverages are also linked to 1.2 million new cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD)—a leading cause of death—each year.

That’s staggering!

Yet, despite this undeniable harm, sugary drinks remain virtually unregulated across the globe.

Why do sugary drinks get a free pass?

Here again, I’m telling you that we need a full-on assault against our toxic food supply. Because let’s be real, SSBs are just another piece of the very dangerous, lethal puzzle.

Will you break free from Big Food’s chokehold—or keep putting your health at risk?

If literally anything else caused this much disease, it would be banned overnight. I mean, we’ve cracked down on cigarettes… the U.S. surgeon general wants to add a cancer warning to alcohol labels

Why aren’t we doing the same for sugar-sweetened drinks? And other ultra-processed foods?

Efforts like soft drink taxes, consumer education, and marketing restrictions—especially for children—are critical. But in places like the U.S., big corporations hold too much power. Even New York City couldn’t pass a simple soda size limit.

As a result, sugary beverages continue to wreak havoc on health. How much longer will this continue?

Let me break this down another way for you…

SSBs are quickly consumed, digested in a flash, and trigger insulin spikes that drive cravings, weight gain, insulin resistance, and more. And now, research shows they actually drive life-threatening and -shortening diseases.

Will you let your sugar addiction drive you into a Type 2 diabetes or CVD diagnosis? I sure hope not.

P.S. I’ve been calling for warning labels on sugary products for years. Say it with me now: #sugarkillz
