If you’ve been with me for a while, you know how often I talk about the dangers of high blood sugar.
Blood sugar imbalance fuels everything from weight gain and inflammation to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.
But there’s another major concern we can’t afford to ignore…
Cognitive decline.
New hope emerges for brain health
New studies are uncovering a powerful connection between blood sugar-lowering drugs and a dramatically reduced risk of dementia.
And while I’m not one to jump on every pharmaceutical bandwagon, these findings tell us something critically important…
According to a large study, two classes of newer blood sugar medications—GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) and SGLT2 inhibitors—were linked to significantly lower rates of Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia (ADRD).
GLP-1 users saw a 33 percent reduction in risk—and those using SGLT2s experienced a 43 percent drop!
Plus, another study showed GLP-1 users had a 45 percent lower risk of all-cause dementia compared to those receiving standard care, a placebo, or no treatment. (Interestingly, this effect didn’t extend to SGLT2 users in this particular trial.)
Researchers believe we’re seeing these positive results thanks to therapies that allow for better control of blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation, and weight.
Not only that, but GLP-1s may enhance blood vessel health and reduce neuroinflammation—offering even more protection against cognitive decline.
Blood sugar management is crucial
Don’t take this discussion as a green light to run out and grab a prescription for the latest blood sugar medication.
After all, these drugs aren’t magic bullets—and they do come with potential side effects.
I wanted to share this new study with you because it highlights a truth I’ve been preaching for years—something we can’t afford to ignore…
The lower your blood sugar, the better your odds of staving off disease.
So, let’s go over some of my go-to lifestyle recommendations for improved metabolic health—which, in turn, will promote healthy aging:
- Adopt a healthy diet—ditch the junk and enjoy fresh, whole foods
- Move your body—aim for 20 to 30 minutes of daily activity
- Prioritize sleep—aim for seven to nine hours of quality shuteye each night
- Manage stress—try techniques such as yoga, mindfulness, or Tai chi
