The “Catch of the Day” can prevent childhood asthma

I really can’t think of a better way to wrap up this weeks’ discussions on kids’ health and the importance of fish oil than with a bit of new research that combines both of these topics.

Take a look…

Omega-3s keep kids healthy, too

This clinical trial featured 64 Greek children between the ages of five and 12, all of whom suffered from mild asthma.

Researchers split the kids into two groups — one group followed their normal diet, while the other followed a Mediterranean diet, which included two meals of fatty fish per week, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains, legumes, and extra virgin olive oil.

After six months, results showed that the fish-eating kids enjoyed significant reductions in bronchial inflammation — a key driver of asthma symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath.

The conclusion: A Mediterranean-style diet that regularly features omega-3-rich, oily fish can help children breathe easier. And seeing how asthma attacks remain one of the leading causes of hospitalization among this age bracket, I’d say that’s a benefit that speaks for itself.

Wild-caught relief for wheezing kids

I know just how beneficial this can be. I had asthma as a child. And by eventually changing my diet, I was able to eliminate it once and for all.

I’ve found the same success with many of my patients. The entire program I use in my practice is actually outlined in my book, The Allergy and Asthma Cure. So this latest finding doesn’t exactly surprise me. (You can pick up a copy by clicking here or visiting www.DrPescatore.com.)

But suffice it to say, eliminating environmental toxins is also a big part of the solution. In fact, research shows that even low levels of BPA exposure can raise kids’ risk of wheezing and asthma by a whopping 50 percent.

So yesterday’s news doesn’t bode well for asthma statistics, to say the least.

But that’s why studies like this one are so important. Fatty, cold-water fish are an abundant source of both omega-3s and vitamin D — two nutrients with research-supported roles in curbing asthma symptoms. And two nutrients that children generally aren’t getting enough of.

So consider adding real fish — not the breaded, processed garbage that comes in a box — to your family’s dinner menu this week. And every week.

Shop for fresh, local, wild-caught cod, haddock, herring, Mahi-mahi, salmon, trout, tuna, or whitefish. Click here for some tips on picking out the best fish.

I know getting some kids to actually eat it might be easier said than done. But keep trying — and in the meantime, a high-quality fish oil supplement can keep your bases covered until they come around.
