The daily ritual that stops your brain from shrinking

Two years. That’s how much younger your brain can be at 80 if you play your cards right.

It’s true. And a new study proves it. This research looked at data from over 1,000 postmenopausal women participating in the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study. The data spanned eight years, and included the subjects’ levels of EPA and DHA, as well as brain volumes. (Measured by MRI once the women reached an average age of 78.)

Amazingly, higher omega-3 levels–and DHA in particular–correlated directly with significantly larger brain volumes among these women. Not to mention a larger volume of the hippocampus, which happens to be your brain’s memory center.

Your hippocampus begins shrinking before you’re even diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. So I probably don’t have to explain why preserving it is so important.

But the fact is, normal aging results in brain shrinkage pretty much across the board. Which is why the threat of a failing mind looms large for all of us as we get older.

It’s also what makes the simple takeaway of this study such a big deal. According to these researchers, you could buy yourself as many as two extra years of vivid memories, sharp mental function… and all the dignity and independence that comes with it.

All you have to do is remember to take your fish oil–at least 3,000 mg of EPA and DHA–every single day
