The not-so-sweet truth about artificial sweeteners (Yes, there’s MORE)

File this under “better living through chemistry” …

Or maybe not.

While scientific advancements have made our lives healthier and simpler in many ways, that’s the furthest thing from the truth when it comes to our food supply.

These bioengineered “foods” are damaging our health. And now, yet another study highlights the not-so-sweet truth about artificial sweeteners…

Artificial sweeteners damage arteries

A new study out of Sweden is raising some serious red flags about aspartame, one of the most common artificial sweeteners in the Standard American Diet (SAD).

Researchers gave mice food that contained 0.15 percent of aspartame daily for 12 weeks. (That’s about the same as a human drinking three cans of diet soda per day.)

And get this…

The aspartame exposure increased insulin levels in the mice, which led to fatty plaque buildup in their arteries.

In other words, this everyday sweetener could pave the way to atherosclerosis—a major risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

Not to mention—the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

Of course, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that aspartame is safe when used within recommended daily limits. But let’s be honest—how many people actually track their daily intake? And how can you state any of the above risks are “safe”?

That kind of mentality sends you straight down the path toward disease—and possibly a damaged heart.

It ALL adds up

At the end of the day, I always talk about moderation.

So, while one can of diet soda every so often won’t necessarily kill you, think about everything else you’re consuming…

Because if your diet is packed with ultra-processed foods (UPFs), you’re NOT practicing moderation. Rather, you’re regularly ingesting chemicals (like aspartame), preservatives, emulsifiers, and who knows what else.

Plus, aspartame (and other artificial sweeteners) are included everywhere—from gum to yogurt to diet sodas—making it all too easy to exceed “safe” levels without even realizing it.

The cumulative effect of these choices is what will lead to disease—and perhaps even send you to an early grave.

Unfortunately, Big Food isn’t helping you make better choices—just look at all of the misleading labels, vague ingredient lists, and consumer “buzzwords” that make UPFs appear “healthy.”

But here’s the truth: The less you depend on added sweetness—artificial or natural—the better your health will be.

So, in addition to adopting a healthy, Mediterranean-style diet, be sure to tackle your sweet tooth.
