The one-two punch that banishes bladder problems without drugs

I recently came across a new study showing, once again, that cranberry takes top honors when it comes to preventing urinary tract infections. But this time, researchers took their investigation up a notch, by pairing cranberry with one of my all-time favorite supplements — probiotics.

Scientists already know that the proanthocyanidins found in cranberry can block bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract. But as part of this study, they also discovered that a multi-strain probiotic — in this case, a blend of L. acidophilus, L. gasseri, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, and B. animalus — has the same protective effect.

And, in fact, when put together, probiotics and cranberry may be even more potent than they are individually.

It will take more research to determine the full potential of this particular combo. But for now, suffice it to say, both probiotics and cranberry should be a part of your supplement arsenal.

As you know by now, there’s not much a good probiotic can’t do — which is why this supplement has earned a permanent place on my “Desert Island” list.

And cranberry?

Well, research reveals it’s a jack-of-all-trades, too — able to fight oxidative stress, improve cholesterol and blood pressure, control inflammation and blood sugar, and protect your arteries. And as I explained just a couple weeks ago, men reap their own unique benefits from a hearty dose of cranberry.

Studies show that daily cranberry supplements can dramatically improve prostate symptoms — not to mention common prostate-related urinary problems, like poor flow and incomplete voiding.

And I don’t know too many older men who aren’t on the market for relief like that.
