As if obesity wasn’t already related to enough health issues… Now, a recent study published in Arthritis and Rheumatism links it to back pain too.
That might seem obvious. But the extent of the problem surprised even me. In this study, almost 75 percent of people with a BMI higher than 25 had lumbar disc degeneration. That is a staggering statistic. And two factors make it even worse:
- In the early stages, lumbar disc degeneration isn’t always painful. So you might not even know you have it. Which means you can easily make it worse.
- By the time you DO realize you have a problem, you’re already in a vicious cycle. The more overweight you are, the more your back will hurt. And the less likely you’ll be to exercise. Which makes losing weight that much harder.
So what can you do to break that cycle?
Well, it’s true that sometimes the simplest fixes are the hardest ones to see. But not in this situation.
