Walk your way to thinner genes

I’ve had more than one patient blame genetics for their weight problems. And there’s no denying that you can be genetically predisposed to gain weight more easily than people who are “naturally thin.”

But there’s also no denying that genetics can be overcome. And some new research proves something I’ve been saying for years. That overcoming your genes is easier than it sounds.

In fact, according to this study, all it takes is a daily walk.

Researchers looked at more than 13,000 obese people. They found that those who spent 4-6 hours a day watching TV increased their genetic tendency towards obesity. But when subjects took a daily walk, they cut that tendency in half. That’s a huge difference. From something incredibly simple. That you can start doing today (if you haven’t already).

Subjects in this study walked for an hour each day. If you’re not up to that level yet, don’t worry. Do what you can and work up to it. Something is always better than nothing.
