Want better sleep? Have a reason to get out of bed in the morning

Since we’ve been on the topic of dangerous over-the-counter medications this week, I figured this was a good opportunity to remind you how risky pharmaceutical sleep aids are.

But the good news is, just like aspirin and proton pump inhibitors, there are a number of safe, natural alternatives for these dangerous medications.

And some of them don’t require swallowing any pills at all.

In fact, you may want to start by taking a closer look at your life, and examining whether or not you’re living with purpose. Because, according to a new study out of Northwestern University, that may be the key to getting a good night’s sleep.

The study involved more than 800 older adults, who are more likely to suffer from poor sleep. They were asked questions about whether they feel their lives have purpose, and then were asked to evaluate their sleep.

Those who saw meaning in their lives reported better sleep quality. Interestingly, they also has fewer physical sleep-disrupting symptoms. For instance, people will purpose-filled lives were 63 percent less likely to experience sleep apnea and 52 percent less likely to suffer restless leg syndrome.

The study’s authors note that mindfulness practices can help cultivate a life with purpose. They’re planning to follow this study up with research on how mindfulness can be used for insomnia.

It’s great to see researchers looking at non-drug ways to address sleep issues, since sleep is the cornerstone of good health. I offer even more drug-free ways to get a good night’s sleep in my Perfect Sleep Protocol. If you can’t remember the last time you got good night’s sleep, I encourage you to check it out. You can learn more about it or enroll today by clicking here.

And whatever you do, don’t turn to prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids to get you through the night. They’re simply not worth the risks.
