WARNING: Processed food kills

Obesity, cancer, diabetes and other chronic health diseases are directly attributable to the food we eat. And it’s all but a foregone conclusion that the path to an early grave is paved with heavily processed junk food.

Of course, we love to spend money on research that tells us exactly what we already know. But in this case? Well, the more ammo we have against Big Food—and the sooner we’re able to put an end to their stranglehold on the public health—the better.

To that end, I want to share some important studies linking higher intakes of ice cream, soda, hamburgers, and other “ultra-processed” food and drink to a higher risk of heart disease… and ultimately, an untimely death.

Raising mortality with every bite

First up, we have the NutriNet-Sante study. This research started in 2009, and featured data from more than 100,000 French adults. Participants were 43 years old, on average, at the start of the study.

All subjects completed multiple food surveys, and scientists placed them in one of four groups based on their consumption of ultra-processed food and drink.

Overall, ultra-processed foods made up just over 17 percent of the diet among both male and female subjects. And not surprisingly, subjects with the highest levels of processed food consumption were younger, less active, more likely to smoke, and less likely to eat fresh produce and fiber.

Also not surprising? Subjects with the highest processed food intake were 12 percent more likely to wind up with heart disease, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease over the course of five years.

That’s a significant increase in risk. And it’s not the only one, either…

Another study analyzed data from nearly 20,000 men and women over the course of a decade. And it found that subjects who consumed more than four servings of ultra-processed food each day were 62 percent more likely to die during the study period.

Ultimately, each additional serving of ultra-processed food raised mortality risk, from any cause, by a whopping 18 percent.

Corporations over country

Of course, my favorite part of all this research is the subsequent editorial, which reads: “These findings add to growing evidence of an association between ultra-processed food and adverse health outcomes that has important implications for dietary advice and food policies.”

Gee… YA THINK?

How much longer are we going to allow Big Agribusiness and their flunkies over at Big Food to make us sick? The cost of these illnesses comes out of our pockets, and quite frankly, it is unjustifiable—to say nothing of the lives it takes.

Yet here we are, with idiots at the helm, puzzling over what to do next.

Well allow me: We have to encourage people to eat less ultra-processed foods—by not subsidizing their ingredients and production, and by making real, fresh food more accessible and affordable instead.

How simple is that? Clearly, too complex for the U.S. government to do. And I’ll tell you why: Because all of these agribusiness, fast food, and big beverage companies have paid their way right into power. And politicians will stay in their pockets for as long as we let them.

No matter what school of thought you belong to in terms of diet—from keto to “plant-based” and everything in between—there’s not an expert alive who will say that ultra-processed food is healthy. So it’s high time our policies reflected the facts.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it one thousand times: The powers-that-be MUST start restricting the sale of this poison—whether through regulation or taxation or both. We have done this with tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. So why not food?

The research is clear: Ultra-processed food raises risk of cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)… and yes, death.

We’ve executed human convicts on less evidence than that. So it’s time to kill the processed food industry, before even more Americans die by its greedy, invisible hand.
