I was having dinner with a group of people. Some of them were doctors or were married to doctors, but there was one registered dietician in the crowd who was gunning for me as soon as she found out what I did for a living.
She used the same tired arguments those of us in the natural medicine world have heard — and refuted — thousands of times: that what we do isn’t based in science, that there isn’t proof, that nutritional supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so how could they be safe?
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.
As you know, I don’t make any of this stuff up. (I couldn’t even if I tried!) Everything I tell you about is referenced in and backed up by scientific literature. Just because most mainstream doctors and other health care practitioners don’t bother to read to stay current, isn’t my fault. And yet, my colleagues and I constantly have to justify our practices to so-called “experts” who haven’t picked up a medical journal in a decade (if ever).
I may often be far ahead of the curve in trying new techniques and therapies. But again, I don’t make any of that up either. I read, find something that I think is intriguing, with good theory behind it, and then try it out on patients. More often than not, the results are tremendous. And eventually, science catches up to me.
The recommendations for vitamin D supplementation, folic acid supplementation for pregnant women, fish oil for cardiovascular disease, coenzyme Q10 for those on statin medications, decreasing the amount of sugar in your diet — all of these things started as “alternative” therapies (and trust me, I could go on and on). And now, every single one these therapies are considered state-of-the-art health care recommendations from your local “doc in the box.”
“Fringe” has become mainstream. Because it WORKS. And science has proven it, over and over again.
But science doesn’t stop just because the mainstream accepts something.
