The Hidden Hormone Problem Many Women Are Missing

It’s funny—back when I was in medical school (yes, when the earth was still cooling), polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, was considered rare.

Today? Not so much.

In fact, it’s been hiding in plain sight for decades—and far too many women are still being overlooked, misdiagnosed, or simply told their symptoms are “normal.”

Let’s set the record straight.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder. It often shows up as:

  • Irregular or missing periods
  • Elevated testosterone levels
  • Sometimes (but not always) ovarian cysts

And those imbalances can trigger a cascade of frustrating symptoms: excess hair growth, acne, weight gain, thinning hair, constant hunger—and even infertility.

Now here’s where it gets personal.

Throughout my entire career working in weight and lifestyle medicine, I’ve seen countless women who could not lose weight—no matter what they did.

I’m talking about women who:

  • Ate less and less (even starving themselves—never a good idea)
  • Felt hungry all the time
  • Struggled with constant “food noise” they couldn’t shut off
  • Dealt with irregular cycles and hormonal chaos

And many of them were told nothing was wrong.

But once they came to me—and we identified PCOS—everything changed.

With the right diagnosis, proper treatment, and a targeted diet, the results were often dramatic:

Weight started to come off, hunger normalized, periods regulated, and skin cleared.

And that was much to the dismay of a few skeptical OB/GYNs who didn’t quite agree with my approach.

Here’s the bigger issue…

For years, medicine has largely overlooked conditions that primarily affect women. It’s a system that was built around male-centered research and diseases—and PCOS is one of the many conditions that slipped through the cracks.

So, when women say their hormones feel “off,” I want you to hear this loud and clear:

Its real. And it deserves to be treated seriously.

So, what is the root issue?

PCOS is, at its core, a problem of insulin dysregulation.

And the good news?

That’s something we can absolutely address.

Start here:

  • Eat lean animal protein
  • Load up on non-starchy vegetables
  • Include fruits (yes, even fatty fruits like avocado)
  • Add nuts, seeds, and healthy oils

Simple. Effective. And incredibly powerful when done right.
