Summer is in full swing—and I personally can’t get enough fun in the sun.
But all that exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, heat, and air pollution can really do a number on your skin—speeding signs of aging, drying it out, and triggering inflammation beneath the surface.
Fortunately, one of the strongest allies in skin protection may already be on your radar—and your dinner plate…
I’m talking about astaxanthin—nature’s most powerful antioxidant.
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid made by microalgae—and it’s what salmon, krill, and flamingos consume to get their reddish color.
But it also does a lot more than color seafood—it helps your body fight oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and protect your skin cells from sun-induced damage.
Now, cutting-edge research shows astaxanthin can act like an internal sunscreen—by preserving collagen, improving skin hydration, reducing fine lines, and even reversing UV-related skin aging.
A 2024 clinical study showed that 6 mg of astaxanthin daily for six weeks significantly improved elasticity, moisture levels, and crow’s feet in test subjects.
In another study spanning 16 weeks, participants taking 6–12 mg of astaxanthin daily maintained plumper, more hydrated skin while placebo users experienced deterioration.
This powerful antioxidant also reduces hyperpigmentation (dark spots) by calming overactive melanocytes—the cells that produce melanin. Plus, it improves skin barrier function, keeping skin better protected and more resilient under the summer sun.
Your summer “glow-up” starts here
Enjoying more wild-caught salmon and shrimp is a great way to start incorporating astaxanthin into your summer skin-care routine.
But unless you’re eating seafood daily, your diet alone likely won’t deliver a therapeutic dose. That’s where supplementation comes in…
Look for a natural astaxanthin supplement sourced from microalgae (not synthetic versions), which are widely available online and in natural food or vitamin stores.
And aim for 4 to 12 mg daily. Research shows this is the sweet spot for noticeable improvements in skin tone, texture, and elasticity—plus systemic antioxidant benefits that support your heart, brain, and eyes.
Of course, I must issue a word of caution: While astaxanthin offers powerful protection from the inside, don’t ditch your sunscreen or another sun-protection measures on the outside.
Think of it as a dual defense: external shielding plus internal reinforcement.
In other words, don’t forget to apply your mineral-based sunscreen. I only ever recommend using sunscreen made from one of two ingredients: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
And once you’ve reached your sun quota for the day, wear hats, sunglasses, and loose-fitting clothing. You can even find stylish, protective clothing that offers its own sun protection factor (SPF).
