There has been a lot of buzz lately about ultra-processed foods—and for that, I’m very grateful.
But there’s another major danger in our food supply that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.
I’m talking about PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
This class of chemicals includes thousands of compounds used in industrial and consumer products since the 1950s. And they’re everywhere.
I’ve warned about them before. But new data reveals something even more shocking: You might be swallowing this “silent poison” daily.
A new report from the French environmental organization Générations Futures analyzed data from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
And get this…
They found shocking levels of PFAS contamination in common foods across Europe—including fish, meat, eggs, and dairy.
More specifically, PFAS showed up in:
- 69 percent of fish
- 55 percent of offal and mollusks
- 39 percent of eggs
- 23 percent of milk
- 14 percent of meat
Even more alarming? Out of the thousands of PFAS in use today, just four are subject to food regulations. Yet these samples also contained multiple non-regulated PFAS.
These chemicals have been linked to serious health risks including thyroid dysfunction, high cholesterol, organ damage, cancer, and more.
So, no—this isn’t “trace exposure” we can shrug off. (Can you even imagine what we’d find if we looked at the tens of thousands of PFAS in use?!)
And according to EFSA, it doesn’t even take much to exceed the “safe” limit. A single egg could push your grandchild past the tolerable weekly intake. And a modest portion of meat could do the same for a 130-pound adult.
While France is looking into how this invisible threat is infiltrating their food supply, Germany and the Netherlands have also begun expanding their PFAS monitoring across more food categories.
Meanwhile, the U.S. (unsurprisingly) lags behind—failing to fully track or regulate the thousands of PFAS chemicals flooding our food, water, and consumer products.
But you deserve to know what you’re really eating—and what it’s doing to your health.
Because these so-called “invisible” chemicals don’t just pass through you. They build up. They last for decades. And they can take your health down, one bite at a time.
Bottom line? Stick to the basics. Skip packaged, processed foods. Opt for real, whole foods like grass-fed and -finished meat, organic poultry, wild-caught fish and seafood, seasonal produce, and healthy fats from eggs, nuts, seeds, and more.
My local farmer’s market offers a ton of fresh, local, seasonal, and organic food. But no matter where you buy, I encourage you to talk with your local farmer, grocer, butcher, or fishmonger. Ask them where the food is coming from so you never have any questions before it lands on your dinner plate.
